Mohamed Hasim Mattar

About the Movement

Who was Mohamed Mattar?
Mohamed Mattar was a 26-year-old Sudanese engineer who was shot and killed during the June 3rd Khartoum Massacre. He became a symbol of the revolution after friends turned their profile pictures blue—his favorite color. That blue became a banner for justice.

What happened on June 3rd?
On June 3rd, 2019, security forces violently dispersed a peaceful sit-in in Khartoum where thousands of Sudanese people were demanding civilian rule. Hundreds were killed, injured, or went missing. The massacre shocked the nation and the world.

Why Blue?
Blue was Mohamed Mattar’s favorite color. After his death, his friends and then thousands of others changed their profile pictures to blue in his memory. It quickly became a symbol of unity, grief, and resistance—a simple but powerful way for people around the world to say: “We see you. We remember you. We stand with you.”

Global Solidarity
The blue profile pictures, the art, the vigils, the protests—it spread far beyond Sudan. From London to New York, Cape Town to Cairo, the world turned blue to honour Sudan's martyrs and demand justice.
